Tooth Bonding Guide

Tooth Bonding Guide

Teeth bonding is a cosmetic dental procedure that is a great solution to multiple situations depending on your oral needs. This procedure involves the use of a resin material similar to the shade of the tooth bonded to a tooth to repair it. In applying this material, a light is used to bond it to the tooth for restoration. Some of the scenarios where tooth bonding can be an option are:

  • To repair chipped or cracked teeth
  • To repair decayed teeth (cavities are filled with composite resins)
  • To enhance the appearance of discolored teeth
  • To change the size of a tooth (make larger, adjust shape, etc.)
  • To close a gap between teeth
  • A substitute to amalgam fillings

Teeth Bonding Procedure

The entire process of teeth bonding at Dental Made Easy takes about 30 to 60 minutes. This can vary depending on the specific case. The first step is the dentist choosing a composite resin color that is comparable to your natural tooth. Following this the dentist creates a rough surface on the tooth and applies the bonding agent. Creating this surface allows for the liquid agent and the composite to adhere better. After this the composite is placed on to the tooth and sculpted to reconstruct it. Then a UV light hardens material drying it, and your dentist can further shape and polish the tooth to match your others.

Risks to Tooth Bonding

There are no major risks involving teeth bonding. During the procedure, anesthesia is not necessary for the patient. Something to be aware of is that the composite resin is not as strong as our natural teeth, so there is a possibility that it could detach from the tooth or chip. Although this can potentially happen, it does not occur as often as certain cases with fillings, veneers, or crowns. Your Dental Made Easy dentist will advise you to avoid chewing ice, fingernail biting, eating hard candies/food, or any other activity that is prone to damaging teeth. Be careful to also note that composite resin is not stain-resistant as other materials used in dental procedures. Discoloration may occur if you smoke or drink beverages with a reputation of staining teeth (like coffee or wine). Keep in mind, whitening treatments do not work on resin.

Tooth Bonding Aftercare

Caring for your teeth after your procedure is similar to how you already should be tending to your smile. Be sure to brush and floss your teeth twice a day. As previously mentioned, stay away from any foods or habits that can cause your tooth to crack or break. Visit your dental professional for checkups and cleanings every six months. If you are experiencing any discomfort or issues with your tooth, talk to your dentist immediately.

If you are looking for a quick, inexpensive solution to fixing your tooth, tooth bonding may be the procedure for you. Contact us at Dental Made Easy to book an appointment today!
