Should You Get Your Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Should You Get Your Wisdom Teeth Removed?

by dentalmadeeasy / Wednesday, 10 March 2021 / Published in Blog Updates

It has become a common practice these days to remove your wisdom teeth as a teen or young adult. Wisdom teeth are the third molars located in the very back of the mouth. They usually start to grow between the ages of 17 to 25. Once they begin to grow, if they have completely erupted (grown in fully), and they are positioned properly, removal is not necessary. They also do not need to be removed if they can be cleaned well and are healthy.

Playing It Safe

However, as a preventative measure, your dentist may still recommend the extraction of your wisdom teeth. If an X-ray shows that in the future they may bother you because they are impacted (trapped) or any different health concerns, it is easiest to remove the teeth the younger you are. As you get older, the bones located in your mouth become tougher to remove. The longer it takes for this removal can lead to difficulties during and after the surgery. This can range from mobility issues with the jaw to heavy bleeding. These teeth should only be extracted under these circumstances:

  • Damage to your other teeth

    • Wisdom teeth can cause crowding in your mouth. This occurs when they do not have enough room to grow correctly. This may push your other teeth around leading to pain and complications with your bite.

  • Causing jaw damage and other issues within the mouth

    • Sometimes due to how your wisdom teeth may grow in, as mentioned previously, your teeth may be impacted in your jaw. Impacted teeth can lead to infections or cysts developing in the area. These are major factors to look out for because this can mess around with bone support and roots of nearby teeth.
    • If your teeth have partially erupted through the gums, this may still be a good reason to remove them. Most times this can lead to swollen gums. When the gums become swollen, there may be difficulty getting a thorough clean. Any part of the mouth not being cleaned carefully is a breeding ground for bacteria. Bacteria in this space can cause infections or gum disease.

Wisdom teeth extraction is not necessary but if you have any concerns, it is important to be examined by a doctor. Be sure to come and visit us at Dental Made Easy for any questions regarding your wisdom teeth!
